Me... on a model horse!

Have you ever dreamed of riding one of your model horses?
In 1984, Just About Horses magazine featured an article explaining one method to "put yourself on a Breyer horse."
I have very specific memories of my best friend, Sarah, and I discussing this article.  Although the pictures weren't terribly realistic, they were awfully fun.  We imagined ourselves in all sorts of model horse set-ups, none of which were ever realized.
Fast forward twenty eight years to yesterday.  I was checking my Facebook feed and noticed this picture of hobbyist, Laura Mitchell.  Look, she's riding a model horse!
I made a comment on the photo and after a bit of discussion, Laura very graciously offered to put me on a model horse.  A couple hours later, this arrived in my inbox.
Ok, I realize that I am forty three years old and it's sort of ridiculous for me to be this excited about riding a model horse, but...  Isn't this the coolest thing ever!?!  Thank you so much, Laura!

P.S. If anyone else would like to join in the fun, Laura used this webpage to make the photos.  I will happily publish any and all pictures of my blog readers riding their models!

  2. The two girls in the photo are Lisa and Shari Heino, and they were the ones that got me into the hobby (I had collected, but I thought I was the *only one in the world* that collected model horses!) Lisa I think still collects, but Shari went on to training dogs.

  3. I don't know--I think the cheesy factor is part of the charm.

My dad once put a saddleseat rider on a Breyer Smarty Jones, using Photoshop, as a retirement gift. He even put the whole lot crossing the finish line at the Derby. Very cheesy, very fun.

  5. Me, me! Waving hand excitedly...I'm thirty nine years old and easily as excited about this as you are, Jennifer! I remember this article well. I bet my horse friend, also a Karen, and I were discussing this article just when you and your friend were. Such sweet memories!!

I've done it a couple of times with my Julips but this one's my favourite. (if I highly unflattering view of myself, lol)

  15. This is a really old post, but I'm so happy you left a comment on it as it *still* makes me ridiculously happy. Yay! for riding model horses.

And let me tell you, I was sooooo jealous of you and Shari. Not only did you get to ride model horses, it's obvious you have a really cool mom!

  16. I just realized these posts were from 2012.. hehehehe but i was so excited seeing US mentioned and our article! Often I ask collectors if they remember it and they do... (when they are the old school collectors, that is!) I thought it was awesome how even in the breyer manual I saw how they put the article title IN the manual to promote JAH! another plug for RIDING A BREYER! My mom is very creative at making stuff... she used to design our own xmas xcards and valentines cards.. photo us, then draw the card around us on a big posterboard and rephotograph it! (there was one where the whole family were xmas carolers... and another had baby shari popping out of a gift box (box was drawn)... I need to put that collection on FB to show people how cool it was! I think the caroller one is linked on my page.. Shari had posted that one. Dad was really the original photographer in the family with the darkroom... but it was mom who got creative and did more with the cameras. Nowadays, I LOVE vintage photographs (DOGS) and I collect those like a fiend.. I was excited to find the article posted so i could grab the pics and show all my photo seller buddies, without me having to find whereever my old JAH is! WOOOHOOO!!!! (Shari was the one who found your link.. I am surprised she didn't write anything!) I just bought an old buckskin mustang on ebay (a duplicate of course.. levelled foot).. but i think i'll send that seller the pic of me wrestling the mustang to give her a real kick! YESS!
