Elizabeth Bouras

In 1986, Elizabeth Bouras wrote a short article for Just About Horses entitled Showing the Model Arabian. It included eight photos, seven of which featured tacked up model Arabians. I was immediately and completely obsessed.

"Someday," I thought. "I want to take pictures like that."

Eventually, I found my way to other hobby publications. I continued to see Liz Bouras' name in show results...
and advertisements.
I thought, "I want to show like that. I want to paint like that. I want to sculpt like that."
In 2000, Liz sold a few pieces of her famous tack collection on eBay. Even after all these years, I remember her words: I collect tack like Imelda Marcos collects shoes

I thought, "I want to collect tack like that."

Then I scraped together all my pennies and bought her vintage Susan Bensema Young saddle

I still own it.
Shortly after that, I traded for a HA Regel resin painted in Liz's signature star dapple grey. He's a humble little horse, but he reminded me of that long ago JAH article.

 I still own him, too.
A few years after that, Liz came to a show in Colorado. I really wanted to meet her, to tell her how much she had inspired me, but I was too shy. Instead, I sat quietly at my table and said nothing.
We did meet later online. I can't claim a close friendship, but honestly, just seeing her name on my Facebook friends list made me feel like I had arrived.

Also, it turns out that she was really, really, really badass.

Who wouldn't want to be like that?
In recent months, Liz contributed generously to both my Ed Bogucki...
and Dee Crawley memorials.
Her taste was impeccable, her collection legendary.

Seriously, who wouldn't want to live like that?
This seems utterly and completely impossible.
Thank you, Liz, for teaching us how to show, paint, sculpt, collect and live. You are already missed.
