If there's one thing I've learned to appreciate in all my years making tack, it's the value of good, clear reference photos. I love reference photos. It doesn't matter that I already have more photos of Native American tack than I will ever use. When I saw this gorgeous costumedisplayed in the Crazy Horse Memorial visitor center, I immediately grabbed my camera and started snapping away. I'd love to make a 1:9 scale replica of this someday, but even if that never happens, I am delighted to add these pictures to my tack reference library. Enjoy!

ReplyDeleteThe placement of the stirrup decoration looks odd to me; you'd never be able to see it when someone is mounted. Do you think the placement was intentional or a goof?
I have no actual knowledge about this, but I suspect it's a goof. You might have noticed there isn't a bridle either, just a mask and reins... And let me tell, you the other side rein attachment was unique to say the least!
DeleteI don't know this for sure, either, but I suspect it's a modern replica of a historical costume. As Fabian pointed out, the mask isn't quite right, and there was no part of this that looked like it had ever touched a real horse.
