The owl and the pussycat

I've gotten out of the habit of taking my camera on rides, so of course, we've been seeing a lot of animals. It's mostly the usual suspects: hawks, deer, coyotes and snakes.

Last week we saw the first eagle of the season, and I knew it was time to start carrying my camera again. I brought it with me Tuesday, hoping for eagles. Instead, I got an owl!
He was sitting quietly at the base of a tree, when I noticed him. We were very close to him, and I expected him to fly away immediately. I halted Lucy and  snapped a couple quick pictures even though my view was obstructed by the branches and tall grass.
He didn't move, so I asked Lucy to walk forward a few steps. The view was better, so I took a few more pictures.
A few more steps, a few more pictures.
Finally, I got my money, and then he took to the sky.
We rode up to the 6th Avenue bridge, then turned back and rode home through the river bottom. Once again, it was mostly devoid of animals. Well, except for the cat.
We often see neighborhood kitties stalking rabbits near the gold course, but this was the first time I've seen a cat down in the trees. I hope she was keeping an eye out for the owl (and also the eagles and coyotes!).
That was a fun ride. I'm glad I brought my camera.

  1. I love how in the 1st photo the dark crevices in the tree appear to be framing the owl
