The Making of MarziPAM

by Carly Kudalis

I am pleased to introduce my entry for the BreyerFest 2025 Best Customs Contest,MarziPAM.

He is an extreme drastic customized Breyer Proud Arabian Mare submitted in the Most Extreme Custom division!
This guy was quite the project and faced many “versions” as I continued to pull apart and put him back together in order to get the “flow” I was looking for. I initially had a multi horse entry planned, however, over the winter I hit severe burnout and had zero motivation or ambition to work on this piece. He sat for weeks untouched. I would do a bit of work, let him sit, not like the progress, restart it, and so on. Even near completion I considered trashing him again and starting a new entry. But I was too far along to let him sit and waste, and the deadline was approaching quickly, so I pieced him together, plugging along, and spending hours and hours in the studio perfecting him to the best of my ability. Once the sculpting was complete, the rest of him was smooth sailing from there!
I finished him using acrylics and pastels to a rich dapple grey with chrome.
Over the years I have learned to have a deep appreciation for dapple grays and the variety of “stages” they can be found in, so I have gravitated towards that coat color for a lot of my recent pieces. I figured with a contest like this, a dynamic coat color would be excellent to showcase!
I truly did not believe this horse would be completed.
He was a labor of love….and a lot of frustration…but I am grateful to have pushed through and completed him!
Congratulations, Carly. MarziPAM was worth every minute you spent on him. Good luck in Kentucky!
