Last month, I unexpectedly found myself in need of a new-to-me car. My Mom sent a check to help us with the purchase price. The note attached said, "Happy birthday!"

Because of this, I was not expecting anything on my actual birthday, but Mom sent another check.

"You didn't need to do that," I told her when I called her to thank her.

"I wanted to," she said. "What are you going to spend it on?"

I laughed and admitted that I didn't know, but it would probably be something for Olive.
I had to think about it for a bit. I work at a tack shop with a generous employee discount so I've got the basics covered. Still, there are some kind of semi-ridiculous splurge items that we do not carry at work that I've been low key lusting after for a long time. I did the math, and the price was just under the amount of the check. That seemed like fate, so I went ahead and bought them.
It's going to be a while before this round of birthday presents arrives. Everything is coming from Europe - because of course it is - and everything is backordered - because, again, of course it is. Still, I'm happy to have something to look forward to. Thank you, Mom. Olive and I are very appreciative.
