First ride of 2015

We've had snow on the ground since Christmas, which has made it a lot easier for me to stay home and work on tack.  Still, all work and no play makes Jennifer a cranky tackmaker, so today Santana and I braved the elements and went on a short trail ride.
We were accompanied by Emma and Doodle and Mary Jo and Scarlett.
The footing ranged from kind of scary to just fine.
Mostly it was wet.
Really, really wet.
On the way home, we crossed paths with a coyote.
It's hard to tell from the picture, but he had a big, fat prairie dog in his mouth!
I'm so glad we were able to fit this ride in before the snow starts again tonight.  Hopefully, it won't be another week before the second ride of 2015!

  1. It's very true about the no play part! Only you could make muddy hoofprints interesting... Congrats on getting such a good coyote view. We once saw coyote pups, which I instantly named "coyote puffs." This was in Minnesota.

  2. Okay, as a Californian, what are the circles in the middle of his hooves? Some type of protection for the frog against snow?

    1. Those are the snowpads. They prevent the snow from balling up under the horse's hooves.
