Flyover

Every trip to California includes a visit to Eaton Canyon.

It's less than a block from my mom's house, and is one of my absolute favorite places.
It was also, unfortunately, the epicenter of January's gigantic Eaton Fire.
The entire canyon is closed for the foreseeable future.
On our first full day in California, Ryan and I walked up to the canyon entrance to see what we could see.
It wasn't much. Between the security fence and the fog, the canyon was mostly hidden.
We didn't mind.
We had a plan.
In fact, Ryan had packed his drone for exactly this reason.
Goodbye. little guy. Go show us the canyon!
Ryan flew his drone from our location on Altadena Drive west to the bridge (still standing) and southeast to the Nature Center (total loss). We checked out our favorite landmarks and were delighted to see that most of the old oaks - including the Party Tree - made it through. Here's the highlight reel.
Here's another thing that made it though, the equestrian arena that sits atop the former site of Eaton Canyon Riding Club.
Although, of course, I'd rather be down there in the rocks and the cactus, I'm so glad we were able to visit Eaton Canyon. Thank you, Ryan!

  1. Goodness kids are handy! What a great way to see something I've never grasped the scale of before.

  2. That fire was so scary. I have friends whose horses were evacuated in the middle of the night during the worst of it. I'm actually surprised at how much green has already come back in the canyon. The drone footage is beautiful. What a great perspective!

  3. Amazing that anything at all survived the fires! And the green is coming back too.
