I grew up in Altadena, California in a beautiful 1930's home nestled up against the base of the San Gabriel mountains.
At the top of Mom's block, there is an entrance to Eaton Canyon.
Eaton Canyon is one of my favorite places in the entire world.
I've walked those trails with my mom, my sisters, my husband, my kids, my dogs, my friends and sometimes, just myself.I love that canyon.
Last night Eaton Canyon exploded in flames. Fueled by the Santa Ana winds, the entire area is now a fiery hellscape.
Mom's house is right in the middle of the orange area.
Her street was listed by name on the first mandatory evacuation order.
As of this morning, the fire has burned more than two thousand acres and is zero percent contained.
Mom is safe and sound in Burbank, and the neighbors we stay with when we're there are also okay.
When I started writing this post, I was convinced our house was gone. I have since been informed, as of an hour ago, that's not the case. A miracle. I hope it holds. It's a spot of good news in what has been a heartbreaking day. I am so sad for my friends and family in Southern California, and I mourn that beautiful canyon.

I am beyond gutted and heartsick. So relieved your mom’s house is still standing (wondering about my old house, since it’s RIGHT THERE near the canyon entrance - how could it possibly survive?). Nevertheless, the devastation of the entire area is terrifying and I’m so very sad for all of your mom’s neighbors and beyond. Not in my wildest dreams did I picture this. And thank god your mom was moved to Burbank!!
ReplyDeleteIt's just awful. But, yes, I'm so glad mom isn't there. I know her neighbors would have gotten her out, but she would have never been able to deal with this.
DeleteSuch a beautiful neighborhood and wild space the canyon. Glad you mom is somewhere safe but so sad to see so many places just burning away.
ReplyDeleteOh Jennifer, I’m just out of words to tell you again how sorry I am. I know people and animals are the most important but I surely will be hoping your mom’s home is spared. Thank God she wasn’t there!
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry that all of this is happening, especially so soon after you lost Olive 🙁
ReplyDeleteThe news out of LA is so scary right now. I am very glad to hear your mom is ok.
