Toothy

In a perfect world, the new year would have started where the old year left off - with a nice, long ride down the trail.

Unfortunately, work and weather have conspired to keep me out of the saddle. So far we have only managed one little bareback toodle.
The rest of our time has been spent grooming,
walking...
and in turn out.
Olive loves her mom-is-working, too-cold-to-ride turn out days.
Yesterday was different.
A couple weeks ago, I noticed Olive was having mouth issues. She was due for a dental in the spring, but I sent this picture to my vet and asked if we could do it sooner.
We could!
We did!
The procedure went fine. The problem area quickly identified and easily fixed. Recovery was a different story.
She got five steps outside the barn and said, "I'm done. That's as far as I can go."
Because Olive is still uncomfortable in the big barn, Dr A gave her a bigger than usual dose of sedative. This worked, but it also meant that afterwards she was really, really, really drunk.
So drunk.
I treated her the same way I would treat a very loved, very drunk friend - I took lots of blackmail pictures.
So many.
When she was better able to walk, I led her over to a small retaining wall so that I could sit down.
She plunked her chin down on the wall and used that to hold herself up.
More pictures.
One of the horses in the gelding field came over to see what was going on.
"I'll have what she's having."
It took nearly two hours, but eventually, she sobered up enough to go back in her stall.
I'm really glad to have that behind us. I work today, but maybe tomorrow we can get back to riding!

  1. This reminds me very much of the time we offered pickles to my husband's horse, Pickle. Needless to say... Pickle would not eat the pickle.
