The queen of costumes

Last month, everybody’s favorite barn guy, Lee, celebrated his eighty fifth birthday.

To mark the occasion, Lee's family held a surprise party with a 1950's theme.
All the barn ladies came out, most in costume.
Not me. My official excuse was that I had come straight from work - which was true - but mostly, I'm just not into costumes.
I spent some time talking to JoAnna, who I hadn't see since she changed barns over a year ago. Because of Facebook, I knew her best boy, Ernie, passed recently. I offered my condolences, and she did the same for Olive.
Then she said - and I quote - "But it looks like your new girl has a much better brain."
Oh, that did not land well.
Look, I know Olive could be difficult, but that (almost) never bothered me.
I loved everything about her, especially her weird, often overly complicated brain.
Sage is, in fact, a completely different kind of horse with a completely different - and significantly less complicated - brain.
This is especially obvious during costume season.
Olive really wasn’t into costumes, garlands and ribbons.
She wore them, but a lot of time and went into every photo shoot.
It's not like that with Sage.
She honestly does not care about wearing things on her head, her back, her legs or her body. As long as there's treats, she's good.
Today was Christmas Photo Day, Part Two. I arrived at the barn early and pulled out Linda's big tub o' costumes. I showed it to Sage and asked her which one she wanted to wear.
She said, "Olive All of them!"
So that's what we did.
Olive was my best girl - forever and always - but in this one respect, I will concede that Sage has a better brain.
Good girl, Sagepony. You are the undisputed Queen of Costumes!

  1. I would not said "a better brain" I would said "a different one". I find that the major change of character is difficult because we will -always- compare to our reference heart horse. None is better, it's just a matter of personnal taste and emotional attachment. I really wish for you that Sage will meet your heart HER way with what she have to offer to you even if she will never be Olive.

  2. Olive seemed complicated but came to accept that and love her for it. Sage seems more easy going and I like that about her. A heart horse isn’t replaceable. New horse just find different spots in our hearts to love them.
