October

October is the best month of the best season of the year.

We are only two days into it, and already, my Facebook memories are a flood of pleasant autumn memories.
No surprise, most of these involve horses.

October is the best and most glorious riding month of the year.
Last year, I pretty much took the entire month to celebrate Olive's recovery, both at the barn...
and in the studio.
I was just so incredibly happy she was healthy and whole. I had no premonitions that our time together was coming to an end.
It's okay. I'm okay.
I just miss her.
Although some of the memories are hard, I'm glad I have them.
I'm glad I had her.
This year, I am spending the best month of the best season with a different mustang mare.
It's okay. I'm okay.
Sage is a sweet girl, and I enjoy working with her.
Still, it's hard not to think about what should have been.
October is the best month of the best season, but this year, it's more bittersweet than glorious.

  1. Bittersweet is true, but as you say, it's okay, you're okay. And so am I. Healing right along with you!

  2. Best month for sure! Also I truly understand grieving is hard and a "new replacement horse" no matter how much good is never the one you really want... but with time, it will get better. At least, I really hope so for you! All my heart ;)

  3. I love October, too! It must be especially hard to lose your first horse too soon after waiting a lifetime for her. I've had some challenges with my guy but the relationship is pretty much exactly what I dreamed of. You can be very fond of a horse that is loaned to you, but the bond is different when you are their person. I hope this month brings lots of good memories.
