Once my application to adopt a mustang from Wildhorse Outreach & Advocacy was approved, the next step was to set up a meet and greet with the two most likely candidates: Ruby...
and a soft eyed buckskin named Amber.
WHOA is located in the small mountain of Guffey, which is a two and a half hour drive from Aurora. After a couple weather related postponements, Seth, Piper and I made the trek a couple days before I left for California.
We misjudged the drive time and arrived ridiculously early. Fortunately, we were able to kill some time hiking in nearby Guffey Gorge. Then - finally! - it was time to go to WHOA.
When we arrived, Ruby and Amber were out of their pens and standing quietly on a highline.
Amber was just as cute as could be, but my eyes went straight to Ruby.
Before we officially met the horses, Stefanie and her helper, Taylor, asked some specific questions about what I was looking for. I said I wanted a sweet mare with a lot of sass. They laughed and said simultaneously, "Ruby."After that, it was pretty much only Ruby for me.
I walked all the way around her, studying her from every angle.
She's not a perfect physical speciman. There are definitely a few things I'd like to change, but overall, she's pretty solid. And that color! I am obsessed!
Stefanie untied her and put her through her paces, both in hand and on the lunge line. She is a lot further along than I'd expected. Any doubts I'd had about the wisdom of adopting a young mustang disappeared completely.
At this point, I was pretty smitten, not just with Ruby, but with the entire WHOA program.
I was ready to write a check right then and there, but Stefanie told me to sleep on it.I gave Ruby another kiss and told her I'd back. Then Seth and I got in the minivan and headed down the mountain.

Oh Jennifer!! CONGRATULATIONS if you ge her!! What a sweet looking filly!! You *definitely * have a thing for red horses!! (Although I'm gonna miss WINSLOW when he goes back home!! Don't care! He is a handsome hunk! (smiles!)
ReplyDeleteIs RUBY still in her winter coat?? While I don't know enough about rabicano coloring to say if she's a true rabicano, she doesn't look like she has enough white in her coat to be a *real* roan either! (Can't quite tell by the photo--but her head doesn't look dark like a roan's would either!) The horse in the background of your last 2 photos looks more like a true roan than she does!! ( NO offense meant!)
No matter what color she turns out to be, she looks like a sweet heart and can wait to read/hear what you do with her! ( By the way, I think the name RUBY will fit her--if she turns out to be a gem!)
She really is an interesting color! I hope the two of you have a great partnership going forward!
ReplyDeleteAnd what did you decide after sleeping on it?
ReplyDeleteShe's very pretty and looks friendly.
I'm also worried about getting a young horse. But maybe it's perfect. Because you don't have to correct other people's mistakes. Of course, you can make a lot of them yourself... laugh. But you have many years of experience with horses. It'll be fine.
Congratulation!
ReplyDeleteWhen I've bought Amira, I was said her name was Sacrifice (didn't had the papers yet) and I disliked it, so I nammed her Sweetie. But then I got the papers and -reading it- I first felt like Amira wasn't as sweet as Sweetie, but in the end I ended up coming back to her real name.
No other name than Amira can fit her better, she had the right name from the start.
It's hard to change a name, but goot luck to find another. Ruby is cute.
She is SUPER cute. And it sounds like she has a good mind.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to find out what you decide!
ReplyDeleteOn pins and needles waiting to hear how things have evolved! Ruby is a VERY pretty girl.
