The bonus horse

If life had done according to plan, I would have never met Winslow.

He's here because Olive died, and I needed a horse to put in her stall.
I needed a horse to carry me through my grief.
I needed a horse to be a bridge between Olive and whatever comes next.
I needed a bonus horse.
Winslow arrived on the second day of February, which is, of course, the second day of NaMoPaiMo.
Although he did not paint a model, he was - for me - a huge part of this year's event.
At one point, I seriously considered changing the color of my NaMoPaiMo horse from pintaloosa to light, "Winslow" palomino. I didn't, but let me tell you, it was a close thing.
As it turns out, I'm really glad I stuck to the original plan.
This is so much better.
This is actually perfect.
Truth be told, there's a part of me - and not a small part - that wishes I had never met Winslow. In that alternate timneline, Olive would be alive, and we'd be happily doing our thing, the way I thought we'd be doing it for the next twenty years or so.
Sadly, no one can change what's happened. Olive is gone, life goes on and I am so lucky and grateful to have Winslow - both of them - in my life.
Thank you again to Trisha for playing matchmaker, Pam for sharing her good boy and Erin Corbett and Stone Horses for creating this sweet reminder of the world's best bonus horse.

  1. I now have Stitch, who I wasn't supposed to have, after losing one horse unexpectedly one year ago this week and knowing that I would be saying goodbye to my other horse later that summer. He's been a lovely horse to work with, he helped immensely with my healing last year, but there's still that bit of me that wishes we never had to meet.

  2. I'm so sorry about the circumstances, but he is a beautiful horse, and I hope you two can create lasting memories as well.

  3. oy! This makes me wish that I was artistic enough to try NaMoPaiMo even as a beginning novice! I love Peter Stone's a the mold they chose to represent "Winslow" is perfect!! Have you chosen a name yet?

Boy!! I'll tell you what!! The "real" Winslow in these photos is a pony sized chunk!! Weren't you telling us (when he first arrived) that even though he's considered a mustang that he had some Fell Pony blood in his ancestry??
OoooWhee!! In these photos, he looks like he's a small draft cross--or you guys are feeding him real well! Hehe!! In any case, he's a sweet looking palomino chunk!!

  4. Drat!! I hate when the words get cut up or off! First word of sentence is "boy" and the word after "Peter Stone's " is--and!! Sorry about that!!
