Better than insurance

Colic surgery rehab is no joke.
I have been visiting Olive several times a day, taking her for little walkies (ten minutes at a time only),
monitoring her food and water intake (both good),
obsessing over her incision (only a little swollen)...
and generally helping her pass the time without going too stir crazy.
Also, I've been talking to people. Everyone wants to know how Olive is doing. They ask questions about her surgery, how long she was in the ICU and how much all of this cost. When I give them a ballpark figure, they usually ask if I had insurance.

I did not have insurance, at least not in the traditional sense.

But it turns out what I have is better. I have friend insurance.

Heather Malone's Go Fund Me wasn't the only hobby based Olive fundraiser. Stone Horses under the guidance of Erin Corbett had their own campaign. They called it An Olive for Olive.
Using a mare version of the popular Remington mold sculpted by Maggie Bennett, they created a one of a kind portrait model of Olive.
Stone in-house artist, Jess Hamill perfectly captured Olive's rich, chestnut coat and big white markings.
I would have never thought to use this model for Olive, but it works surprisingly well.
When I saw this picture, I actually gasped, "Oh, it's Boo!"
Well, the ears should be bigger, but you know...
An Olive for Olive was auctioned off on Model Horse Place, with all proceeds going to Olive's care.
She sold for so much money.
Thank you, Stone Horses, Erin Corbett, Jess Hamill and every single person who bid on Olive. With friends like you, who needs insurance?
P.S. I'm kidding. I should have totally had insurance!

  1. Holy Cow!! I actually had a chance to go up to Shipshewana this week with a friend of mine(so she could pick up her auction model) and I got to see the auction "Olive" in person!!
She is GORGEOUS!! I wish I had the finances to bid myself--but with Breyerfest so close now-----
Congratulations to whoever won her because she *is* totally worth it!!
I asked for permission to take photos of the model(it just made me feel connected somehow!!)
I am *so* glad that Olive seems to have come through her surgery so well(and--YES!! lady--get you some insurance!!)

    1. So, um, I expect she's uninsurable now, given that she has a documented history of BIG colic. Honestly, I don't think I'd put her through a second one anyway. This rehab is no joke. She's young and strong and I love her, but there's only so much an animal can be expected to do.

  2. OK--I can't resist!! Maybe whoever won the auction will see this and be tickled! But-- if you're looking for a name for the model, "Olive-Oy" came to mind! Heh! ("Oy" being a Jewish word for "Oh no!") Could also be "Olive Oyl" from the "Popeye" cartoon--but the cartoon character is *no way* as *gorgeous * as that Remington!!(Sorry! Just a little attempt at humor after all the stress of the last couple of days!)

    1. Here's a big fat spoiler alert: The model is named Everyone's Olive, and she is living in Aurora, Colorado.

  3. I am guessing Heather bought her then!

  4. Surgical insurance payments can add up. It’s better to just save the amount you would pay to insurance and maybe get a smartpak supplement that covers up to 15k. Most insurers say 2 years with no issues to cover a horse with hx of colic and surgery.

    1. That's pretty much the route I was going. She had about half the surgery/ICU stay cost in her savings account, which was at least a good start. More would have been better, obviously. I will definitely look into the SmartPak program later. The problem with her is that she's a picky eater, and most supplements get rejected.

  6. What a *beautiful * fitting name for this model!! How wonderful if someone gifted her to you as well!
Somehow, you (or the new owner) will have to bring her to Breyerfest for your other fans/readers to see!! (And--maybe --some time in the future--when the "real" Olive has recovered, you could bring her too???(I know! I know! But--one could dream, right??)

  7. I‘m sorry to show again how ignorant I‘am, but could someone please explain the expression „smartpak supplement“ to me? Being German I‘ve never heard or read that before.
