NaMoPaiMo day three

Today was a busy day, both in and out of the studio. I am just now catching up on the NaMoPaiMo Facebook page, reading everyone's progress and lack-of-progress reports. Here are a few that caught my eye.

Perhaps the best and most complete report came from Alice Cole, who had "never seriously tried to paint a model before" this week. She writes: We are deep into the ugly stages over here but I’m having a blast learning with this guy!

Some difficulties:
  • Training my brain to believe that brushstrokes ARE OKAY especially in the first stages. Worst case scenario I can make them look like hair as I go along
  • Tiny horse = even tinier crevices to fit a brush around. This one seems obvious but I just didn’t think about it until I started painting. I’ve definitely been trying to use very thin washes of paint so that it doesn’t pool in this guy’s wrinkles.
  • PATIENCE. Waiting for coats to dry (even with acrylic) is so hard for me. When im in a creative headspace, I tend to want to work as much as I physically can and get it done. Working on this guy is definitely training me to take it slower and appreciate the process.
Some positives:
  • Working on this project has challenged the more perfectionist parts of my brain to go with the flow and not take things so seriously. After all, this is a fun activity with a great community who is here to back us all!
  • I love working with new materials. As daunting as it can be, I’m finding a rhythm in how I apply acrylic on a plastic pony as opposed to a canvas and it’s super satisfying.
  • Progress is happening! Although it has been tough to wait through the drying process, it is so nice to see each layer add to the final product that I have in mind.
I’m excited to see where the next few days will bring us! Here is a progress pic of my little guy next to a quick painting I did to give myself something to do in between layers.
I really enjoyed this in-depth analysis, especially from a newbie painter. It's clear you've got this under control. What's more, you are the NaMoPaiMo Champion of the Day.
Congratulations, Alice, and good job to everyone who worked on their models today. We may be busy, but we're getting things done!
