Green on red

In the recent discussion about the uses for Raw Umber Pan Pastels, several people mentioned its value in toning down models that had gone a little too red. I asked for an example and received this wonderful and extremely helpful series of pictures from Michelle Montesano. Thank you, Michelle!

Using Green to Tame Red

by Michelle Montesano

Technically, no Raw Umber was used in this series of pictures. However, they do show how I used a "too green" color to correct this pony.
She'd gotten very bright orange/red so I covered her all over in the greenest color I had, in this case, Pan Pastel Diarylide Yellow Extra Dark. Honestly, after I did it, I was worried I might have ruined her. Here she is before sealing.
And after. You can really see how well this toned down the red in just one coat.
This last photo is about where she ended up after adding back the browns.
All finished!
I don't have any photographic proof, but I've used Raw Umber for similar situations on darker horses. The concept is exactly the same. If you need less red, try a little green!
