Kaffi's chestnuts

When Kaffi arrived in February, it was hard to see anything but his winter coat.

It seemed like he was literally made of hair.
As he shed out - which took forever - I noticed an unusual feature.
It's very obvious here...
No chestnut!
The inside of his left hind leg is completely smooth. You can poke around under the hair all you want - trust me, I have - there's nothing there.
The other hand leg has a little sliver of a chestnut. It's not much, but it's definitely there.
The chestnuts on his forelegs are completely normal.
It turns out this is not actually uncommon in Icelandic horses. Still it's neat seeing - and feeling - it in person. Thank you, Kaffi, for sharing your weirdo legs with me!

  1. How fascinating! Thank you for sharing Kaffi & all the other horses out there with Olive with us. And it's wonderful to hear Olive is doing well! May you be able to have it easier soon too.
