Fire update

There are six fires burning in the Los Angeles area, five of which are one hundred percent uncontained. One of the largest, the Eaton Fire, has been burning its way through Altadena for more than a day. I grew up in Altadena, and my family still owns a house there.

Earlier today, one of my younger sister's friends drove up to my mom's neighborhood.
It was grim.
But somehow, our house is still standing.
One of the entrances to Eaton Canyon is located at the top of her block.
There is, at least, one burnt to the ground house there.
Other casualties (so far) include Zorthian Ranch where I rode Anahid, Silhouette, Tonka, Lady Bug and Dos when I was eight, the Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center where I learned to swim, the Altadena Town and Country Club where I worked for a summer when I was eighteen, the Altadena Senior Center where my mom spent so much time after my dad's death, Fox's Restaurant which had the best pie in Altadena, Eaton Canyon Nature Center destination of many field trips and the Bunny Museum, which I visited with my sister and her husband in August.
Earlier today, my older sister posted this on her Facebook page:
Although the age and locations are different, this is a perfect description of how I am feeling. I am also from Altadena, and today, I am mourning my hometown.

  2. You know?? I actually heard the newscasters mention Altdena by name in the news today and I thought of you!! We were discussing California's situation in our Bible Study class and said prayers for the LORD'S protection for the people involved!
So sad to hear about your childhood places being effected by the fire ! That hurts, I know!! Hopefully, they'll be able to rebuild??
I'm not good at direction--so I'm not sure how far Van Nuys is from there--but the fires have me concerned for my stepbrother who lives there!!
What a blessing that your childhood home is still there!! Fire or not, those mountains still look beautiful!! Prayers that the fires will (or can) be brought under control soon without Hopefully no more damage or loss of life!!
