Colorado is a mail ballot/early voting state. Every registered voter automatically receives a ballot in the mail. These ballots can be placed in any of the drop boxes located throughout the state.
Every year after I drop off my ballot, I tell my barn buddies, "That is so close. Next year we should ride to the ballot box." Every year, everyone agrees, but we never do it.
We probably wouldn't have done it this year either, but then Olive colicked, and I spent the entire summer taking her for walks. When all the usual places got boring, we started venturing further afield. Eventually, we ended up at the ballot box.
It wasn't easy.
Even though it's a short walk, there's a lot of scary stuff between the barn and the ballot box.It took half of July to achieve this photo.
Karen and Kaffi accompanied us on some of our training walks.Pretty sure he made it to the box on his first try.
Last week, my ballot arrived in the mail. I made my choices and brought it to the barn. After years of talking about it, this was finally going to happen!
Olive dressed for the occasion.Of course, we were joined by Karen and Kaffi.
With ballots in hand, we headed out. We walked through the field,
past the playground...
and across the parking lot.
Olive had not done this walk in more than a month, but her training held. She clearly understood the mission and led the entire way.
Before we knew it, we were at the ballot box.
Tada!
Then it was Karen and Kaffi's turn.
Tada!
Good girl, Olive.
After that, it was back to the barn.
Have I ever mentioned that Olive walks really fast? Here we are proudly wearing our "I Voted" sticker.
And here's Seth, who also walked with us and took all these great photos.
That was really fun. Next year, we ride!

omg i love everything about this!
ReplyDeleteI love it!
ReplyDeleteThis was a great story post! Loved it 😊
ReplyDeleteGreat post, but I've seen 3 reports this morning that some early voting boxes were SET ON FIRE. So... maybe they should have cctv on all of them now. :/
ReplyDeleteFortunately, that hasn't been an issue in Colorado. I've received an email from the election board letting me know they have my ballot. My vote will be counted!
DeleteI'm delighted with your success. In PA you have to register to get a mail-in ballot. We returned our ballots to the drop box yesterday; but no sticker. :(
ReplyDeleteI'm really glad our ballots come with a sticker.
DeleteOk--I'm confused?? Is Olive a pony--or a horse?? Next to you--she looks horse sized(As she does in other photos next to other horses)--but next to Seth, she looks pony sized! (Or is Seth just that tall??)
ReplyDeleteShe's a pony, since she is 14hh
DeleteSeth is 5'10", I am 5'3" and Olive is (I think) just a scooch over 14 hands. I consider her a pony.
DeleteI, uh, might have searched through old blog posts to find how tall she is 🫣
DeleteAnything under 14.2hh is considered a pony

DeleteI've never actually measured her. When I got her, I was told me she was fourteen hands exactly. However, when I went through her former owners' old Facebook posts, there was a reference to her being 14.2. I do think she's smaller than that. But I'm not actually sure. Mostly, I just say she's a scooch over 14 hands :D
DeleteHuh! How do you think she would react to being measured?
DeleteI suspect she would view that activity with extreme suspicion. lol
DeleteFair enough. There's a mule at my barn who has...feelings about being measured 😂
