Marissa's diorama entry

Happy July! It's officially BreyerFest season, and today, we're showcasing some of the entries in the Diorama Contest. The first one comes from Marissa Helling.
Marissa writes: The theme this year is “Driving the World Forward - Driving Forward is more than just about driving horses (or even cars). It’s about the innovations that drive us forward as a society.” Breyer asked us to depict an innovation that helped drive the world forward. I chose Guide Horses. The rigorous training, high failure rate, large expenses, and short lifespan of dogs led Janet and Don Burleson to look for alternatives. After seeing the mounted police in New York City, they realized horses would be perfect. The longer lifespans and natural endurance made miniature horses natural candidates for guide work. The first guide horse went on the job 1999, and they’ve paved the way for many other service horses. Today, not only do we have guide horses, but many also provide mobility assistance and medical alert. The disabled and assistance animal community wouldn’t be where it is today without the aid of Guide Horses.
An innovation based on horses is a perfect choice for this year's Diorama Contest. Congratulations and good luck, Marissa. I hope you have a wonderful BreyerFest!
