Alright, back to Dioramas! This fun entry comes from the always fun Karin Hullatti.
She writes: The Erie Canal opened in 1825. The three hundred sixty three mile waterway was navigated by boats and barges pulled by mules. It stretches from Albany to Buffalo in upstate New York and took almost half the time to transport people and goods between the cities, compared to a land route. The canal and the mules are the subject of the song popularized by Pete Seeger.“I've got a mule and her name is Sal
Fifteen miles on the Erie Canal
She's a good old worker and a good old pal
Fifteen miles on the Erie Canal
We haul'd some barges in our day
Filled with lumber, coal, and hay
We know every inch of the way
From Albany to Buffalo
Low bridge, everybody down
Low bridge, yeah we're coming to a town
And you'll always know your neighbor
And you'll always know your pal
If you ever navigated on the Erie Canal”
Congratulations, Karinny, and thank you for the earworm. I'll probably be humming that from now to BreyerFest!

I've been on the Erie Canal many years ago. It's nice to see a depiction of the mules hauling a barge on this 'engineering marvel' of it's time.
ReplyDeleteGood Luck!
