If you're a horse girl of a certain age, chances are you were traumatized by this book sometime during your childhood.
My older sister clued me in, so I had it better than most. Still, this is one book that should never, ever be judged by its cover. This makes it the perfect centerpiece for the "Can't Judge a Book By Its Cover" class at the Daneille Feldman's Why the Chicken Crossed the Road Photo Show.
Using a Google image search, I found the most innocuous looking edition of this book...and shrunk it down to 1:9 scale. Actually, it's a little bigger than that, but I wanted to make sure the title would be visible in my photo.
I could have put the book on a bookcase, but where's the fun in that? Instead, I used leftover scraps of basswood to make a Little Free Library. I don't have the proper tools for this - just a straight edge and an X-acto knife - so it's a little wonky on close inspection.
Despite that, it's pretty cute and big enough to hold a whole bunch of tiny books. The caption reads: The unsuspecting Barn Rat is delighted to find a pony book in her neighborhood Little Free Library.
I prefer the full body shot, but this crop better shows off the book's title. I've been in a hobby slump for the last little bit, but this was a fun project. Maybe tomorrow I'll have an idea for another photo.

God that book. I was not warned and it still triggers me.
ReplyDeleteI know so many people who were deeply traumatized by that book. I actually felt just a little bit guilty doing this to the doll.
Delete100%...... ugh that book
DeleteI have never read that book. Sounds lucky on my part.
ReplyDeleteIt's really not a good book for horse loving children. I hope Danielle has read it, however, or this entry might fall flat.
DeleteThe Red Pony and Where the Red Fern Grows just made me cry. Both were so heartbreaking.
ReplyDeleteNever read it... sounds like I’m not missing much?
ReplyDeleteI was warned ahead of time, so while it's been in my library for 50 years, I've never read it & never intend to. I guess I should give it away, huh? But I don't want to traumatize anyone else!
ReplyDeleteThere is always the Little Free Library option. Lol. Sorry, couldn't resist.
