Today is day four of the California firestorm. There are six fires currently burning in Los Angeles County. Over fifty six square miles have been affected, ten thousand structures have been destroyed and at least eleven people are dead. My hometown, Altadena, has been particularly hard hit by the Eaton fire. So much that made the city so special is gone. It makes so, so, so sad.

Today is also day twelve of my post-Olive life. Sometimes, I am okay. Other times - yesterday was a prime example - I am decidedly not.
Today was one of the better days. For the first time in nearly a week, I went to the barn. I said hello to my favorite horses. Then I walked down the aisle to Olive's stall.Seth has been working diligently on the floors in there since New Year's Day. He finished them on Wednesday, and this was my first look-see. There was a bit of snow from yesterday's storm, but check out these tight mat seams. They are so good.
There's also a nifty, new barrier to help keep the shavings in the stall. Seth does good work.
I didn't want to give up this stall before, and I really don't want to lose it now. I guess I'm going to have to find a horse to put in it.I met a candidate today. She's very sweet and meets most of my requirements.

She's adorable!
ReplyDeleteAgree she is a cutie 🥰
ReplyDeleteShe's sooooooo bay.
ReplyDeleteTHAT doesn't matter at all! Norino, my little bay gelding, had just the same coloring and I had him for more than 25 years!!! He even had a spot of white on his head like this mare.
DeleteThis are wonderful news - you to be able to look for another horse. I really couldn't imagine you without one now.

I know people think it's really too soon, which is kind of funny considering Olive herself was a total knee jerk reaction to losing Stealth. I didn't even ride her before I got her. I am actually being a lot more considered this time, but also, I need a horse to put in that stall. I feel lost without that.
DeleteI didn't lose a horse, but when my heart dog died I had such a hole in my heart, I knew the only thing that would help it heal was another dog. She turned out to be the craziest, goofiest, lovable girl. She healed my heart. It's been almost 6 years since I lost Gracie, but Ridglea has made it such a great 6 years. We're ready when we're ready. Sometimes it takes months or years, sometimes it's just a few weeks.
DeleteShe's soooo cute, love her soft eyes and little star❣️
ReplyDeleteSuch a cute little girl! I hope that you will find a horse to fill the hole in your heart ❤️
ReplyDeleteMay I ask for a bit of information about her? Name, age, breed, etc?
Don't get attached. I liked her, but I have some serious concerns, too. Her name is Bristol, and she's nine. Mama was a branded BLM mustang. Dad is unknown. She's about the same height as Olive but much littler (one of the concerns). I'll probably go back and ride her later this month. We'll see.
DeleteDon't worry, I'm not getting attached 🙂
DeleteI just wanted a bit more information. Thanks!
Thanks for asking, just what I wanted to know, as well. I'm curious about things like that.
DeleteSpeaking of hope, the owners of the Bunny Museum have announced that they intend to rebuild!
ReplyDeleteAs cute as Bristol is, I wouldn't rush into getting another horse right away!! You yourself said that you have good days and bad days --which is an indication that you're still grieving!! It's only been a week! Give yourself time!! Grief doesn't work like that!
ReplyDeleteWhile I'm not saying not to buy a horse (you can do as you wish!) would it be fair to the new purchase if your heart hasn't fully healed from Olive's loss?? There would always be the chance that you would compare the new one to her (maybe) and would that be fair to her/him if they didn't measure up?? How would you know if you were appreciating the new horse for how they were for all their own quirks and personality??
I hope I haven't overstepped myself in saying this!! I'm just concerned and don't want you to do something that you might have regrets for if you discover that you weren't 💯 ready!! Forgive me--no offense is meant!!
Don't rush! I completely understand the desire to find a horse and try to return to a new normal. I get paying board on an empty stall is hard. I rushed when my nice gelding passed and it wasn't good. Then I was sad and had a horse I now needed to rehome too! It all worked out eventually and I have lovely new red mare partner I got the same time you got Olive. Be patient and let the horse say its the one. You are a good rider and get along with a lot of horses but your own horse needs to be special.
ReplyDeleteYou'll know when you find the right horse to help rebuild your heart. I lost my heart horse to colic as well, and found my next partner in a mustang who checked none of the boxes I had set out to fill - but has become exactly the horse I needed. Something just clicked when I sat on him the first time, even though I was trying to convince myself it wasn't happening. Wait for the click - it will happen!
ReplyDeleteWhen our former neighbor lost his 11 year old Rhodesian Ridgeback Tyra due to cancer I asked him a bit later if he wanted to get another dog. He replied: No!
ReplyDeleteI couldn't imagine him without one as Tyra accompanied him everywhere and even went to work with daily (he has a shop like the one you work in, Jen, but much smaller). Months later I met him with a puppy: Grace, another Rhodesian Ridgeback...
I get that it feels very soon, but also, I am lost without a horse to tend to. I am exploring several options, some of which don't actually involve me owning the horse. I haven't made any permanent decisions and won't until it feels right.
ReplyDeleteThere are many horses. Many will check every one of your boxes. Take your time and be ruthless about things that are not quite right. If the "not quite right" thing cannot be changed (too old, wrong size), that is not your horse. If it can be changed, then consider further. Whatever your budget is, look at horses that are above that- the best horses have people who are more concerned with the next home then the $$, and you are the best home a horse could have. It's worth a lot.
ReplyDeleteLeasing could be a really nice intermediate step. Be open to the possibilities and the universe (and Olive) will send you the next one when you are ready.
