Well

Every single person who's watched Olive trot in the last few weeks has thought she was sore behind.

Honestly, that was music to my ears. Given a choice, I would much rather deal with a one time injury, than an on-going chronic condition, like, say, navicular.
Well, it's navicular.
But it's also very mild.
We did a full work up, with x-rays of both feet, and the news is not that dire. Her navicular bones look good, her joints look great and the vet twice complimented my farrier's work. That said, the barefoot/boot experiment is over. Shoes are going back on, and she's started daily Equioxx. If that doesn't do it, we have a Plan B.
Nothing is ever guaranteed with horses, but Dr. Arietta thinks that with a little maintenance, she'll be able to do her job comfortably for the foreseeable future.
It's not what I wanted, but we'll make it work - or let her not work - for as long as we can. Either way, she's my pony. We're in this together.

  1. I’m so sorry to hear this! I hope she will be rideable for you. I’m glad it is a mild case.

I’ve personally never had to deal with navicular or anything like that. But I have sweated out bouts of cellulitis and infrequently (thank you Jesus) colic. Now that we are down to two horses, both in their early-mid 20’s, and my husband and I are both 65-plus, we don’t do much riding. We just have really big, expensive, non-house pets.

Good luck to you and sweet Olive!

  4. Sounds like you have a great management team. Navicular is very manageable today with the correct showing and medications. It is sad to receive a maintenance diagnosis for your horse but again it can be maintained. Keep your spirts up and follow the plan.

  5. Well that was the best written reveal yet. You have the skill of frankness and brevity for disaster. May the reality be much better than your fears.
