While I was looking for an ad to illustrate today's "I am a thief" post, I happened across this Valentine's Day model horse story. Most of the fiction published in 1980's era Just About Horses was pretty bad, but this one merits a reread. Enjoy!

"Ten dollars is an awful lot of money for a plastic horse"
ReplyDelete:D
In 1982, ten dollars represented a month's allowance or five hours of babysitting. That was serious money!
ReplyDeleteThat is a story so near and dear to my heart. Once a month I was allowed to go to the best toy store in the world in Washington D.C. where I grew up. I could choose one toy for doing my chores for the month. I always struggled over the horses and the Dakin stuffed animals. Usually it was a horse!!! Now that collection belongs mostly to my son, but I still fondly remember the endless hours I played with each of them, all of their names and wonderful fun they provided a lonely little girl!!! I love these guys as much as my real horses!! Thanks for sharing it with me!!

What a lovely, nicely-written story. All I can say is if I'd been that mom, I probably would have said "No" to a trip on the bus in the rain after a long day at work - she was a real sport! :-)
ReplyDeleteWell, in the '90s, Breyers around here tended to be $25, which was annoyingly 5 weeks of allowance for me. My parents paid my allowance in a lump sum once a month, so I had to wait 2 months to buy a new horse with my allowance...
ReplyDelete$25 would have been about 5-6 hours of babysitting (for the right family) for me. Ah, inflation. :)

ReplyDeletewow I would work really hard to get my hands on the plastic horses my family once deemed worthless.
This was a lovely story, I only just got around to reading it. Thanks so much for posting!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute little story! And wow, breyers were cheap back then...
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute story! I remember giving my My Little Ponies and Fashion Star Fillies baths in the kitchen sink while my mom cooked dinner. I discovered Breyers later. To this day though, the kitchen table is the first place I like to display a new model!
