I'd like to begin by thanking every single person who has commented on my blog in the last three days. As of right now, there are one hundred and sixty eight entries in the raffle. Amazing!
Since a lot of those comments mentioned the saddle rats, I thought it was time for a training update. All three girls are doing well, but Nutmeg in particular is showing amazing under saddle aptitude.
She's a very quiet and docile rat and seems completely unfazed by the weight of a saddle.Still, even slow rats are slippery.
We've started experimenting with girths.
This make saddling a bit more complicated.Pssst, James! That's a girth not a breastplate!
Holly's first reaction to the girth pressure was to freeze in her tracks.
However, in just a few moments she was striding out like a champion.
And then there's Peppermint...
Poor Peppermint! She may look like Basil, but trust me, she's no Basil! We haven't quite given up on her, but don't expect to see her in any tack related photo shoots soon. She's just not into it.
That's okay, I guess. It would have been nice to have a saddle rat drill team, but a saddle rat pas de deux will be almost as impressive!

'Rats pas de deux' would indeed be quite a sight! Too cute!

OMG....that is just too funny.
ReplyDeleteSaddle Rat Drill Team- best mental picture EVER!
ReplyDeleteFantastic Photos!
ReplyDeleteI love your saddle rats :)
Maybe its time to make them some pack saddles, and then you can call them pack rats. Hehe
The cuteness!
ReplyDeleteI can't quite imagine trying this on my cat...
Aw. I don't have any rats and my mouse passed away recently - maybe you can make cat sized saddles too?
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how mild-mannered the rats are, to put up with such strange contraptions on their backs! haha
ReplyDeleteHave they ever tried to nibble on the tack?
OMG Pack rats!!!! How have I not thought of that before? I DO have a pack set with the wooden sawbuck tree and panniers. That is officially on my to-do list!
ReplyDeleteAnd Terri--just like that you're at the top of the merit prize list!
:D
Lol! That was a terrible joke! Awful! (I guess I should take my awful humor out of lurk mode? ;D)
ReplyDeleteBut you really have to do it now! The mob needs photos of silliness!
Sooo cute! Makes me want to saddle up one of my rabbits! :) hmm I think I have one that would tolerate it....
ReplyDeleteI want a rat but my mum won't let me get one.:(
ReplyDeleteRosie
I should try doing this with my Degus:) I think they would be good jumper rats;) haha
ReplyDeleteBwahahahaha!
ReplyDeleteI'm in a motel. I bet my neighbors think I've lost it! Made me LOL!
Go Team Rattie!
ReplyDeleteI am in love with Nutmeg! She is just such a pretty rat.
ReplyDeleteI love your performance rats! If only I had thought of that when I had my rat Mokey (named after the Summer Pony/Winter Pony books).
ReplyDeleteThey are just too cute! I think the girth definitely helps, as long as she doesn't mind it :)
ReplyDeleteI would pay to see the pas de duex rats...don't forget the appropriate music.
ReplyDeleteaw i <3 Nutmeg shes soo cute XD maby i should get a rat someday
ReplyDeleteToo cute! They all look brilliant in their fancy little saddles :) You should try making them some little harnesses and carts. Now, that would be very impressive! :D
ReplyDeleteCorrie
Sooo cute!
ReplyDeleteYou should try them over some jumps, perhaps they just aren't cut out for flatwork! :P
ReplyDeleteI've been waiting to see your new rats in action! I think the packs rats idea is awesome! I think Terri deserves a prize right there. Maybe a "Judge's Choice" ribbon like some shows have? =) Glad to hear one of them is starting to adapt. I've missed those photos!
ReplyDeleteOh they're so cute! :) I wonder what my guinea pigs would say about that...
ReplyDeleteThey are so cute! I trust that a pas de deux a la Rat is a post on the horizon, maybe? They sure are adorable!
ReplyDelete@Sparrow - pig person here, too. :-) Maybe we could get Jennifer to send us saddles just we could try 'em on our breed? (NO, of course it wouldn't be for my HORSE models, I so prefer them tackless...)
ReplyDeleteom my Gosh they are so cute! all they now are some little riders or handlers Lol, Hahaha.
ReplyDeleteSophie
They are so cute :)
ReplyDeleteI need a pet! Or two, or three....
ReplyDeleteThey are adorable! Maybe have to start actually making rat saddles, lol.
ReplyDeleteSquee!!!! My sons and I LOVE this feature! They are calling for you to create a full website or magazine about saddle rats! Even little Peppermint is doing remarkably well for such a youngster! We are all looking forward to the next installment. I sure hope that everything is back to normal after your ER visit too.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad the rats are happy and doing well with saddle training! I'm impressed with the girth tolerance as well!! They are so adorable! :D
ReplyDeleteAs much as I'd love to try it, I don't think either my cat nor my hermit crab would be suitable candidates for Breyer saddle training! :)
I just love the saddle rats!!!! My son and I have leopard geckos and a red tailed boa. how about saddle reptiles? The next saddle I make, I will try on a gecko and send you a pic. I'm guessing they won't be anywhere near as cooperative as the rats, either that or they will just freeze. I had rats for years . They are such amazing pets!!!! Thanks so much for the entertaining as well as the informative posts!!

ReplyDeletehaha there like what is this thing on me! maybe you could try little breast collars to help keep the saddles from slipping back.
I never get tired looking at those good-natured saddle rats!
ReplyDeleteI really would like to see the rat pas de deux...and western style dressed rats who absolve some nice trail tasks!Hey - and what about cutting? Amused greetings from Germany, Doreen
AWW! They look so cute! GO Peppermint, I know you can do it!!

Hi Mara--Check the BCS saddle rat archives. Basil, the first and best saddle rat, actually tried every discipline you listed except cross country. She was a very versatile and well rounded rat.
ReplyDelete:)
I have to say how much I LOVE your rattie posts! It's nice to see that someone else out there saddles up their rats too! :-) Way back when, I had mice before rats... they of course were too small for my trad saddles, so I always used to put them up IN the saddle on a model. Once I moved up into the rat world though... it was all saddled rodents!!!
ReplyDeleteAll of your rats are adorable. I'm with Leah, a saddle rat drill team would be AMAZING!
ReplyDeleteI love your posts about saddle rats Jen. They are just too adorable!
