Model horse hobbyists love initialism. OF, CM, SR, RR, LSQ, PSQ, NIB, MIB, OOAK, YCI, PSA, HR, PS--it's not unusual for an average MH$P ad to read like a cup of alphabet soup!
Fortunately, most of these abbreviations are pretty easy to decipher. Over the years there have only been a few that left me scratching my head with confusion. One of those was HSO. I can't tell you how long I struggled with that before someone clued me in to its meaning.
In case you're also wondering--this is an HSO.

| Not a horse |
It's not a horse exactly. Instead, it's a Horse Shaped Object.
 |
| Even Emma knows that something ain't right! |
Horses have realistic anatomy and biomechanics. HSO's do not.
 |
| Validator won't even look at him! |
I don't actively collect HSO's, so I was a bit dismayed yesterday when Seth came home with the afro horse (he swears it was a rescue and no money exchanged hands). Today, however, I've decided to embrace its awfulness. Besides, there are some advantages to having a few HSO's at my disposal.

| Gretchen enjoys some of the carpet ponies, July 2012 |
The Gift Horse giveaway of 2012 depleted my carpet herd substantially. I need to be ready the next time a little girl comes to visit.

| Only one of these horses still lives in Colorado |
And, you know, should that girl want to take an HSO home with her... Well, that can definitely be arranged!
I told you the legs were scary...
ReplyDeleteIt's a good idea to have a carpet herd, something I don't happen to have myself. Several young people have come over and asked to play with my horses and I have to be mean and tell them they are just for looking at (good thing they never saw me playing with them)
Lol I like the poor fellow...
ReplyDeleteI was wondering what an HSO was! I have lots of HSO's for little girls (I need them frequently :D)
ReplyDeleteI didn't have a clue what HSO meant! This post brings back memories of my childhood, collecting everything HSO I could get my hands on.
ReplyDeleteGreat Idea, Carpet herds are so fun for when little kids come over. I still remember all of mine!
ReplyDeleteWhen I first started out, I was able to figure out (or find out) what most of the acronyms were. The Acronyms Finder online helped with a lot more but I couldn't for the life of me figure out "HSO". I finally had to break down and ask. Boy did I feel silly!!!
ReplyDeleteIt sure makes sense....now.
Oh man, the full picture is 10 times worse!! I hope he will make some little girl happy!
ReplyDeleteI was tickled when I heard the acronym. I think there are more of them than Breyers and Stones: My Little Ponies, Made-in-Japans, Grand Champions, PlayMobil and Barbies to name a few. But I'm stumped... what is YCI?
ReplyDeleteOk I feel a lot better that others didn't know what HSO was,he's still kind of scary lol but I'm sure some little girl will love him
ReplyDeleteYou are so lucky....a hubby that brings home HSO and visits from little girls...
ReplyDeleteI wish I had more little girls come visit, and specifically, I wish my little niece, Liliana, could come more often. Her mother just sent me a note saying that Lilie has a new imaginary horse friend named Button. Button lives in the house, but she's not housebroken. I've been asked for advice. All I can think is, "Send her to me. She'll come home with Button and Rev and Trillium and at least half a dozen HSO's!"
ReplyDelete:)
I always keep a few HSOs of different age-categories on hand. That way, when my friends have kids and bring them over, I can start the horse-loving brainwashing err... influencing right away! ;)
ReplyDeletetimaru star ii - I believe YCI stands for 'You Call It' in reference to the Peter Stone You-Call-It custom order program. Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong though.
ReplyDeleteLM
I recognize most of the abbreviations, but what are YCI, HR, and PSA? Those are the only ones i'm stumped on.
ReplyDeleteI have so many HSOs from before I discovered Breyers . . . back then, anything vaguely horse-related got lumped into my horse obsession.
ReplyDeleteHR = Hagen-Renaker
ReplyDeletePSA = Peter Stone Arabian

Thanks!!! I can be so dumb sometimes! :)
ReplyDeleteThe horror! I've never heard of the term HSO, although I've seen plenty of them. And been gifted a few from non-hobby family members... lol
ReplyDeleteIt is great that the rats model your tack, but I think you need to step it up a bit. http://www.horsenation.com/2013/02/18/video-du-jour-show-jumping-mice/
ReplyDeleteYCI=You Call It, Stone's annual custom design program.
ReplyDeleteLove the mouse video. The rats do need to get their game on now.
I have too many HSOs in my room..!
ReplyDeleteOh my... I thought the head was scary.;)

Wow, the rest of the body was so much worse than even the head hinted at! The legs! Why are they black??
ReplyDeleteIf nothing else you could use it for painting practice! XD
ReplyDeleteAwww. The Carpet heard! I miss those days!
ReplyDeleteAh haa, I only just twitter what HSO meant haha
ReplyDeleteI was given a HSO for my birthday last year.
ReplyDeleteIt is a unicorn My Little Pony and the person thought that they had found a unicorn mouse for my mouse collection. I had never sean the HSO before or PSA so thanks for the language lesson.
