Almost wordless Wednesday

My drive to the barn takes me past several large vacant lots that are absolutely overrun with prairie dogs.  I realize that most locals consider these critters to be the worst kind of pests.  I'm not a a farmer or a rancher, though.  I grew up in Los Angeles County, and I think prairie dogs are cute.  I had my camera in the car yesterday, so naturally I felt compelled to pull over and take a few (!) photos of the dogs as they went about their business.  This post also includes some pictures of Rev because he's cute, too.  Enjoy!

  5. Gah, prairie dogs! I approve of them. Granted, I'm the person who plays with the gophers at the ranch, but that's just me. ;P

  9. The prairie dogs are adorable! I'd love to see one some day. Have you ever seen a burrowing owl with them? That's a bird I hope I see in the future. We don't have either in MA!

Rev is beautiful - I love the photo of him trotting!

  14. Two cute things about prairie dogs that do not show up in the pictures are all their cute little squeaks and whistles and the way they wag their tails. Oh, the tail wagging is soooo cute!

If it makes you feel any better, Anne, it's snowing now. The forecast is for 5 inches which we desperately need. Hopefully, we'll get it!

Sara--haha! I was wondering if anyone would notice that. Poor Rev. I think he's tired of having me tell him that he really is a tool!

    :)

  16. In the last two pictures Rev is really showing his arabian ancestors!! He is beautiful and love the detail shot you did of him! Those prairie dogs are so funny!

  17. Rev saw a (new) farrier the day after he got the hoof chip. He's still barefoot with a significant chunk of hoof wall missing, but he's sound as can be. It looks funny, but the farrier says he's good to ride so I have been.

Not today, though. It's really snowing now!

  18. My favorite's gotta be the one of the prairie dog standing. Looks like he's about to fall over!

They were all over the place in Wyoming, and the ranchers don't take too kindly to them. I didn't understand why til my dad explained what their holes can do to a horse's leg if they accidentally step in one :(

  33. So glad Rev is ok!

Prairie dogs are so cute! I used to love going to Prairie Pete park and watch them! Here they share their burrows with ground owls which are adorable too! However they are a menace at times. The holes can easily break a persons, a horses or a cows leg if they fall into one. I think they have to be controlled, so they don't overrun areas, but left alone otherwise! We have 2 colonies in town, one in the park where Prairie Pete park was and one on the UTPB campus.
