One year and one week ago, my best friend, Carol, and I spent a pleasant evening walking and window shopping in downtown Stuttgart, Germany.
As usual, I was looking for horses.
I was having a good amount of success.Horses are popular in Germany...
and Schleichs are everywhere.
As we were walking along, Carol noticed a larger horse in a store window.
I told her we couldn't afford the Hermes horse, but we went in anyway. My eyes went straight to the Hermes Arpege dressage saddle.
Carol looked a little higher and noticed the riding helmet.
"I need a new helmet," she told me. I laughed and said, "Not that one," but she was determined. She asked an employee if she could try it on, and that's when we learned that a Hermes helmet costs more than one thousand euros. That's more than all the helmets I tried on today combined, including the Charles Owen!
Needless to say, Carol did not buy the Hermes helmet!
even living where schelich are the most common model horses I have never seen that many together.
ReplyDeleteI wish there was a way to share photos in the comments. This was not nearly the largest Schleich display I saw in Germany. That distinction went to the gift shop at the Stuttgart Zoo.
DeleteIn Germany you can find Schleich horses in many shops. In our small town there was a toy shop with an entire wall full of Schleich.
DeleteI think it's a shame that many of them are not packed and already have scratches from the store.
As far I do loves Hermès, it's luxury at it's highest: way too expensive for common peoples ;)
ReplyDeleteI sold a lot of Hermes saddles back in the day, so I knew what we were getting into when I walked through those doors. I don't think Carol did!
DeleteI always wonder if the designer stuff is actually better than non-designer. My gut says you are mostly paying for the name.
ReplyDeleteI am way out of the high end tack loop now, but there was a time where I sold and rode in Hermes saddles. The quality of the leather was amazing, and they were far and away my favorite saddles to oil. I also loved riding in my boss's Steinkraus. Based on that, I'd say some of the price is the name, but it truly is a top quality product.
DeleteI was born in Germany, but my parents came back to the states because I was the first grandchild when I was still extremely young. According to my passport, I’ve been to 12 countries. The only one I remember is the US. I want to go back so bad, and this is not helping. If our country implodes, Germany would definitely be my top choice for relocation LOL
ReplyDeleteLove the horse books.
