I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm a fellow rat lover/owner for over 20 years and it's always so hard to lose them. They are all such wonderful, individual, loving little characters. RIP Basil.
I'm very sorry for you and your family. I know you will miss her and not just because she looked so well under saddle!
We lost one of our guinea pigs last week. Most people do not understand that little pets can mean just as much to us as big ones, and give you funny looks when you are sad or simply dismiss it as "It was JUST a pig, who cares." Hugs from someone who knows Basil was not "JUST a rat."
I'm not going to kid you--that was tough. Basil had lost a lot of weight since we discovered her tumor, and she all but stopped eating in the last couple days. The kids tried enticing her with her favorite treats, but her appetite just wasn't there. She also started passing blood so together we decided it was time.
I let James take the lead, since she was his rat. I guided him, of course, but he was so grownup about the whole thing. Afterwards, I told him that it was the first really adult decision of his life. He pondered that and said, "Being an adult sucks."
Yeah, sometimes it does.
My vet doesn't usually treat rodents, but she made an exception for Basil. My kids wanted to be there to say goodbye and it was very quiet and very peaceful. We are all worn out from the experience, but there is no doubt that we did right by our little rattie.
I'm so sorry for the loss of Basil. I enjoyed reading about all of her antics. What a mature, strong young family you have. Take care and you'll all be in my thoughts today.
I'm so sorry! My husband was looking over to see what new thing Basil was up to and wants me to pass along his condolences to you and the boys as well. He and I have both enjoyed your pictures so much.
Good on James for being strong enough to let Basil go, and you for teaching him so well so young. So sorry Basil the Saddle Rat extraordinaire is gone. <3
I'm so sorry!

ReplyDeleteShe was such a good rat, and gave so many of us enjoyment, too, with her good-natured tack modeling.
Thank you for sharing her with all of us. Hugs to your boys for losing their little Basil.
