(Not so) tack friendly
Sue Sifton is my favorite of Breyer's regular sculptors, and the Smarty Jones mold is one of her best works. This little race horse has great ABC's and a wonderful, performance ready pose. There is just one small thing I do not like about him, but oh boy, that one small thing can cause some major problems! If you've ever tried to put a bridle on Smarty, you know exactly what I'm talking about--it's that little slot in his mane right behind his ears.
The purpose of the slot is to make him tack friendly, and it's a good idea in principle. Unfortunately, in actual practice it's not friendly at all. I recently finished this Smarty Jones sized racing bridle. Looks pretty good, right?
Here's the problem. To put that bridle on Smarty's head, I had to completely unbuckle both the crownpiece and the throatlatch and slide them out of the left side of the browband. I then had to feed both those straps through the slot, back through the browband and rebuckle them. This is not a quick and easy procedure and it's a lot of wear and tear on the bridle.
I hope the owner of this set won't curse me too much every time she tacks up her Smarty model, and I really hope Breyer won't make any more models with this type of "tack unfriendly" hairdo!
Never really looked at that before. I'll have to keep it in mind the next time I customize one.
ReplyDeleteYes, I can't stand that slot! Even if it was just about 50% bigger that would help - I have a few bridles that won't fit at all, because all the straps won't shove through that tiny hole!
ReplyDeletethis is good to know! I have 2 here I plan on remaking and I will make sure to leave an open space for tack. its also good to know for my original sculpts.. I usually try and just leave a space for the bridle to fit, but its good to remember for remakes too. I never really looked at this close before. mine is still in his box and the other I just never studied. I sure love your tack though!

This is why I made a solemn vow to only make Western one-ear bridles for good old Smarty. XD (and also why whenever my sister paints one I tell her cut out the mane so it's tack-friendly LOL)
ReplyDeleteI'm a bit behind the times on this, but never noticed that he didn't have an open space there. All I have is a custom smarty by Ann Harris, and she was kind enough to cut open a space to make him more tack friendly (being a performance shower herself). Thanks so much for pointing out this issue! >.<
ReplyDeleteYou made that?
ReplyDeleteI saw that on another page saying they made it! ( i belive you made it i will post the link here)

Hi Sam--I've seen that page before and have asked the owner to remove my photo. Obviously she has not complied. It's annoying, but not the end of the world. I think that it's fairly obvious she's claiming pieces by a variety of tackmakers. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteIs this made out of leather ??? I really like it :)might try and make one for my nelly :)
ReplyDeleteThe bridle is made from natural kangaroo lace dyed blue. :)
ReplyDeleteThe person who stole your photo still has the picture up on their site to this day (3 years since you've asked)! Some people just don't know how much work you put into this stuff! But I did ask them to remove it ,too.
ReplyDeleteThis is why I still don't really know if I want to put my pics. on the internet.
Love your blog!
