International Painting Party

A little over six years ago, I was looking for a fun, community event to host on my blog and came up with the idea for NaMoPaiMo.

The premise was simple: commit to paint a single three dimensional model horse - any size, any medium - during the month of February.
I did it...
and so did a whole bunch of my friends.
That first year was so much fun, I rdidn't think anything could ever touch it. Happily, I was wrong. 2018 was bigger and better in every way.
I was so enamored with my little event, I sent out almost two hundred prizes that year, each with a handwritten thank you note.
In 2019, seven hundred seventy five people participated. Together, we painted five hundred forty seven models.
My enthusiasm was unwavering. I thought would run NaMoPaiMo forever.

Then came 2020, which was - except for January! - the worst year ever.
It was also the first year that BreyerWest came to Denver. In February.
I did not enjoy this NaMoPaiMo the way I'd enjoyed its predecessors. Administrative challenges abounded, so much so, I barely had time to paint my own horse. I tried - and failed - to do all the things at BreyerWest. By the end of the month, I was exhausted, frustrated and ready to be done with the whole thing.
Then - just a couple weeks later - the whole world changed.
After a year of isolation, everyone needed a big community event. I went all out for NaMoPaiMo 2021, and it ended up being the biggest one ever, with one thousand one hundred seventy three participants and seven hundred thirty finished models.
BreyerWest returned to Denver in 2022, and once again, it was right at the end of NaMoPaiMo.
This time I was more prepared and did a much better job of juggling both events. I had a great time at BreyerWest.
As for NaMoPaiMo... It went okay, but for the first time ever, there were declines both in participation and - more significantly - the completion rate.
It was also the first year in which I didn't a model in the final collage.
Nothing lasts forever, and it feels like perhaps, NaMoPaiMo has run its course. My life is in a much different place than it was six years ago, and I simply do not have the time or energy to continue investing so much of myself into this. That said, I'm not quite ready to let go, so I've come up with a compromise.
I'm still working out the details, but consider yourself invited to the International Model Horse Painting Party!

  2. Oh. Thanks for letting us know Jennifer. Kinda saddening, but thanks for the compromise.☺️ I look forward to the details! I wanted to join namopaimo but my family doesn't Facebook. I have really enjoyed the guest posts, tips, and passion and time you kindly gave this event. How about during December you do a 12 days of medallion painting, crafts, or tack tips? Thank you for everything you do for this community of wonderfully horse/art crazy people! Your anonymous friend, C.

    1. Eleda: most people buy customizing projects from you guys don't they? I've oogled potential ponies before. It's so nice of you to have customizing bodies available at cheap prices! Haven't bought one yet, but thanks!

    2. We do keep a wide variety of models. I have a bunch of bodies ready to publish when we hear more about Jennifer's plans, so we can promote whatever she decides to do. :-)

    4. So sorry to bother you again, but about how much would it cost to ship 1 traditional model to the Wisconsin-ish area? Thanks again!

    5. Sorry, didn't see your messages before this, but I don't want this comment section to be about me or our business, so please message me from our site with questions about our site and leave Jennifer's blog for her subjects. :-)

  4. Just curious why couldn’t you have handed off some of the admin duties if you weren’t as into it anymore rather than ending the whole thing? And why change the whole name to international painting party? The name was iconic as it was plus didn’t need changed even if the registration/tracking was less detailed this year 🫤

    1. Not going to lie, this feels really critical. I know I am not up to hosting a full NaMoPaiMo this year. This is what I can do to preserve the best parts of the event without killing myself in the process. If that's not good enough for you, I'm sorry. It is what it is.

    2. It has grown to mean a lot to a lot of people, which is all to your credit. But that doesn't mean you have to kill yourself for it. Even if it were just a public Facebook Group and you appointed a few people to police postings as moderators, with nothing else happening (no registration, no prizes, no set requirements for finishing), I think most people would be just as happy. It's just the experience of "getting together" with likeminded horse lovers to do an activity that appeals to most people, I think. :-)

    3. There you go. That's pretty much exactly what International Model Horse Painting Party is going to be.

    4. Beautiful. May I advertise it? And may I have permission to use your graphic to do so, as usual? Only with your permission, of course, my friend.
