Today is Piper's second Gotcha Day/fifth birthday (observed).
To celebrate, she got an extra big helping of her favorite treat.
Olive did better: She got a brand new headstall.Olive's always had a busy mouth. Her previous owners tried several bits before settling on a three piece snaffle with a lozenge in the middle. I started with that, but eventually moved her to the same, but with a Baucher cheek. That was a step in the right direction, but still, I felt like we could do better. Last summer, I tried her in Karen's "S" hack. Almost immediately, that was a good fit. I've been riding her in that, more often than not, ever since.
Karen is a really good friend. When it became obvious that Olive liked the "S" hack, it was no longer a loaner. It was mine. But honestly, it still looked like a Karen bridle. I wanted it to look like a Jennifer bridle, so I started customizing it.
The reins and noseband were the first things to go, but the headstall has been a problem. My ideal was something like this hackamore bridle by PS of Sweden, but that has been out of stock essentially forever.
About a month ago, Heather sent me a link to a similar style headstall by a new, local company called Millbrook Leathers. The price was right, so I ordered one asap.
It arrived yesterday. I tried it on Olive today, and I think with a couple tiny adjustments, this is going to be perfect.
Happy Piper's birthday, Olive!I am so happy to have both of you in my life.

oooooooh i love that headstall! i'm embarrassed to admit that i've been searching for a good hackamore headstall for... a long time. and have never seen this model. but i wanted a purpose-built hackamore headstall, ya know? i ended up ordering a Waldhausen model that is nicely designed, but not quite as nicely constructed as i'd hoped.... this really looks like a nice option, i'm going to look into it!
ReplyDeleteside note: so happy to hear you're liking how Olive goes in the hackamore!
It's not actually marketed as a hackamore headstall, but I think it works quite well for that. The leather is nice quality. I wish the keepers were tighter, but at that price point, I'm not complaining. It also came with rubber reins, which aren't my favorite so I haven't used them.
Deleteit just arrived and it's *so much nicer* than the other one i have omg.... tho i do like the actual noseband piece that came with the Waldhausen (which was a complete hackamore bridle with nose and chin pieces, tho i don't use the chin), and the browband..... so at least it contributed to a final bridle??? either way, thanks for sharing this excellent small business find!
DeleteYay! I'm glad you're pleased, and also, now I don't have to feel like maybe I should have bought the Waldhausen. Please share pictures of your handsome boy in it as soon as possible.
DeleteYay, a tack post! This one sent me to Millbrook Leathers. Seems I'm always learning something new. Olive you look simply smashing.
