There are as many ways to paint model horses as there are model horse painters, and if NaMoPaiMo's taught me anything, it's that there are a lot of model horse painters.
That said, the three most common mediums for painting model horses are oil paints, pastels and pigments and airbrushed acrylics. Over the past six years, I've published a lot of posts about oils and pastels, but airbrush tutorials have been few and far between. Because of this, I am always extra appreciative when airbrush artists like Audrey Dixon share their process on the NaMoPaiMo Facebook page.
This is Audrey's sixth NaMoPaiMo. Her project this year is a traditional scale Scamp resin painted to a shaded dapple black tobiano as a portrait of the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College mascot, Little Onyx.
Audrey shared a fast motion video of her layering the paint for Little Onyx's body color.
Here's a series of still photos showing the stopping points between each layer.
I love the barely there dapples!
Here's the finished pony.Audrey writes: I Did It! I finished my 2022 NaMoPaiMo Entry!
This was probably the least stressful year of all of them for me. I was afraid this year would be tough with a new job, and a broken finger (luckily its not a horrible break and I can go without it being wrapped most of the time), but thanks to a snowstorm last week, I had two extra days during the week to paint. It's only day twelve and I'm already finished! I don't think I've ever gotten one done that early before!
Thank you, Audrey, for sharing so much of your process with all of us. I really do love your pony!
Darling pony, well done!
