This was the hottest Colorado summer ever.
Despite that, most of the horses, including Sage, have said goodbye to their sleek summer hair and are busily growing their fall coats.
Right now, the fall hairs are nearly the same length as the summer hairs, but there are a lot more of them.
This makes the horses look plushy and texture-y.In Sage's case it makes her look even more roany.
I love that.
I was talking with my friend, Anne, and we wandered into the topic of roans.
She told me that, in Dutch, Sage's color is called stekelharige Vos, which translates to prickly haired chestnut.
I love that.
I love her.
Happy fall, Sage. Keep growing all those prickly, little hairs!

She is so cute. My sorrel mare has the prickly roan too!
ReplyDeleteSame thing in San Diego!
ReplyDeleteSage looks really lovely in the last photo.
ReplyDeleteI have a chestnut roan pony. She gets incredibly fluffy with a lot of white hairs now; she’s currently turning into something "Snowcap Appaloosa".
Sage looks beautiful with those little white hairs.
In German, you’d call that "Fuchs Stichelhaarig" or simply "Fuchs Stichel".
I would translate to: "Stippling Fox"
We’ve had a very warm, dry summer here, too. We’re struggling to feed the animals; there’s very little hay available. And what there is, is poor quality.
I’m currently remaking the sidepull for my horse because the fit isn't quite right. I’ve noticed that when I take up the reins, the rings and straps of the cheekpieces slide right over the edge of the cheekbone. Is that intentional in all sidepulls? Honestly, I imagine that is very uncomfortable for the horse. Do you know anything about this?
Honestly, Sage is the first horse I've ever ridden in a sidepull. Hers is pretty loose and there's a fair amount of movement on her head, but she seems very comfortable in it. Earlier this month, I briefly switched her into a more ergonomic English sidepull. I loved the way it looked and fit, but she had two bad rides in a row with that. I went back to this Western one, and she's been an angel. I'm not convinced it's related, but I'm also too superstitious to switch it back!
